Abstract Vortex pumps are usually designed based on its inner flow model. Currently, the models of vortex pump just consider rate at design condition, which results in low efficiency under off-design rates practical engineering. Therefore, main objective this article is to build a model that takes into account impact rates. To reveal mechanism pump, we provide refined field simulations for pump. Performance experiments were conducted validate numerical simulation method. The study found structure non-blade cavity can be regarded as Rankine-like vortex. inflow range limited hub diameter (45 mm), smaller than volute inlet (85 mm). action radius forced gradually decreases from impeller side side. maximum determined by diameter.
